I created a custom release of the firmware for the runner 250 advance based on the MultiWii 2.4. This is a cool upgrade since the firmware distributed by Walkera is based on the older MultiWii 2.2.
Installation kit and instructions are available here:

With MultiWii 2.4 the main advantages are:
    - Allows mission planning
    - Smarter behavior on low battery condition

I have also added a few modifications of my own:
    - Prevent the flip of death
    - On/Off video camera switch

This is a simple USB upgrade that is completely reversible and does not require any hardware modifications or disassembly.

I have fully tested this new firmware on the Runner 250 (R) OSD 1080p GPS

For all the details on what is new from MultiWii, you can look at the full release notes with the links below.

    MultiWii 2.3 : MultiWii • View topic - 2.3 is finally here :)

    Thanks.

Will you be available to support members that adopt this upgrade?

I will make this thread a sticky. And move it to an advanced Modding Forum. As soon as we create one for the Runner 250.

    Cheers

Yes, I will gladly support the upgrade and expand it if there is interest to cover more hardware.

    Hello,

Want to do the update, but would be glad to know if any one else already done this.

    Few questions before:
    - Will turn lights be working as with default version?
    - I fly mostly in acro mode(which looks like is actually Horizon mode), so will I be able to turn on acro, as I can see FMD2 is now "Flight Plan"? Or this is configurable?
    - Actually what is "Flight Plan"? can't find info

    Thank you

Yes, the turn lights are working.

The acro mode is not available with the settings shown in the instructions. It is possible to reconfigure from the MultiWii interface to bring back the acro mode. The problem I am dealing with is the Devo 7 is a 7 channel remote. Throttle Pitch, Roll, Yaw and 3 Auxiliary switches. I would like to control on the drone the following features:

    · Camera On/Off

    · Position Hold

    · Return to home

    · Disarm

    · ARM, normal flight

    · ARM, Flight Plan

No more switches for acro mode. It just means that you need to drop one of features in the list for Acro mode.

This is what I would suggest. I would use the Mix switch:

    0 - Normal mode

    1 – Position hold

    2 – Acro

You will need to set the followings in the MultiWii interface...

I did not do much test in acro mode yet. Let me know how it goes!

    - Actually what is "Flight Plan"? can't find info

I flight plan you are not in command. The Runner is following a pre-program path in advance.

You will find information under MultiWii. This link is a good start:

Attach a sample of a mission that I did:

    Thanks!

I have just upgraded my original walkera runner 250 and added a baro and GPS. Everything is working great but I would love to be able to use the flight plan. Since this is an original Runner I am happy with the progress I have made but I would love to be able to use your mod to use flight plans as well.
I plan on using a mobius camera and some 1080p googles as my FPV system so im not concerned with the camera options too much. Will this firmware/mod work with the original Runner 250 if the baro and GPS mods have already been done? I know the original flight controller doesnt have Aux3 as an option to use so maybe that is a problem.

The missing Aux3 is not a big issue. In my documentation Aux3 is there only to turn on the camera. I do not have access to the original Runner 250. There might be issues with the upgrade. If this is the case it might be easy to fix. The spring is there and last weekend the temperature went above the freezing point. This gave me the chance to perform a some test on the mission option. Unfortunately the MultiWII code is not perfect and even is i have been successful to execute a few missions you need to be ready to abort at any time. I have identify a lot of bugs in the code and as soon as i have some time i will post the new release.

I will wait for more experienced flyers to do this upgrade and hopefully some of them have the original runner 250. Thanks for your work!

The advanced uses the 7th channel also to turn the camera off and on. So you should be fine to do this upgrade. I have not found any issues other than the missing 7th channel on the FC once you upgrade it with a Barometer and GPS.

I just got my GPS today so I'll install it tonight. If all goes well I probably still won't install this upgrade until the bugs are worked out. I am looking forward to doing it though.

Good thing I double checked everything. After calibrations and going for a test flight I found that the gps feature did not work at all! Went back and plugged it and found that I had installed the gps backwards!! So, got that all fixed and will try it as soon as I can get some flying weather.
